A Sacred History

The Camino de Santiago, also known as the Way of St. James, is a network of pilgrimage routes leading to the shrine of St. James in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Tradition holds that the Cathedral houses the sacred remains of St. James.

The English Way, or Camino Inglés, historically served as the maritime pilgrimage route of the Middle Ages, allowing northern European travelers from England, Ireland, Flanders, and Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, etc.) to reach Santiago de Compostela. These pilgrims traveled by boat to the ports of Ferrol and A Coruña where they began their walk. The route was more officially established during the Hundred Years’ War (1337–1453) between England and France. Pilgrims were required to receive permission from the English Crown in order to sail into Galicia.

Many pilgrimage routes lead to Santiago, but The English Way stands out for its historical significance and serene atmosphere, offering a deeply rewarding experience for those seeking a less-traveled path.
